After Nicolas Lancret (French, 1690-1743) Afternoon from the Series The Four Times of Day Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 26 3/4 x 33 3/4 in. (68.0 x 86.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, minor paint losses, craquelure, areas of skinning. N.B. The subject matter of elegant companions playing backgammon in a park is taken from Nicolas Lancret's oil, Afternoon , from the series The Four Times of Day , in the collection of the National Gallery in London. However, the figures are shown as mirror images of the original work, suggesting that the painting at hand was actually copied after the engraving of Lancret's work done by Nicolas de Larmessin IV, as L'Après-Dinée published in 1741.
