Central Plains Beaded Hide Pipe Bag, c. 1870s, beaded with geometric and cross devices on a medium blue background, the rawhide slats from a recycled parfleche and with remnant quillwork, written on the side of the bag "Souvenir Apache War, Arizona, 1883, Frank Tower," lg. 33 in. Provenance: Frank Burton Tower (1861-1950), "In the early 1880s, Mr. Tower was a U.S Mail Carrier along the San Diego mountains and later served for time with the Texas Ranger border patrol. Twice he was taken prisoner by hostile Indians and narrowly escaped torture and death by fleeing down river"; papers and small photo included.
