Ironstone Pottery Presentation Pitcher, America, c. 1890, violet-glazed body with gilt edges and border decoration, with molded branch handle shell strainer and front medallion with gilt inscription "Senator/Martin Wyckoff,/Warren County," marked on the base "u. pottery," (minor wear), ht. 10, wd. 5 1/8, dp. 10 1/4 in. Note: Martin Wycoff (1834-1914) was born near White House, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He studied law at Rutgers College, graduating in 1855. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Wycoff assisted in the raising of a company of the Third New Jersey Volunteers in which he served as a lieutenant. In 1862 he enlisted in the 31st New Jersey Volunteers as an adjutant and later attained the rank of captain. After the war, Wycoff continued his legal practice and represented Warren County, New Jersey, in the state's Senate from 1888 to 1890.
