Captain Daniel Badger Needlework Memorial, stitched by Ann Jones Badger, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1821, worked in silk threads, a family flanking the urn atop a pedestal with printed inscription "Sacred/TO THE/MEMORY/OF/Capt. Daniel Badger,/WHO DIED AUG. 15th, 1819. AGED 44 YEARS./AND/CHARLES HENRY BADGER,/HIS SON,/WHO DIED FEB. 27th, 1806./Aged six weeks.," all under a willow tree with waterfall and landscape beyond, background and figure details painted, (very minor holes), sight 28 x 25 in., with original eglomise mat with gilt lettering "ANN J. BADGER, 1821," and molded giltwood and gesso frame. Provenance: Daniel Badger was born in Boston, May 31, 1775. He married Ann Jones (1782-1855) October 3, 1797 and together they had nine children. Badger was a clothing dealer and ship owner and resided on Windmill Walk at the Mill Bridge, Boston. About 1809 Daniel relocated his family to Cambridge but returned to Boston about 1814 with his business and residence then located on Broad Street. On May 7, 1805 Daniel Badger was commissioned captain of the 1st Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of Massachusetts Militia and held that rank until he resigned is commission September 1, 1813. In the summer of 1815 Daniel contracted yellow fever after visiting one of his ships that had recently arrived from Africa. On August 15 he died near Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
