Cast Iron George Washington Fireback, probably France, late 18th century, the tombstone plate with molded edges illustrating a panoply of arms on a reeded pedestal centering a medallion with the inscription "G. WASHINGTON.E.GENERAL.OF.THE.CONTIN.ARMY.IN.AMERICA." surrounding a stylized bust of Washington, (some surface oxidation), ht. 21, wd. 21 1/8 in. Note: The central image appears to be based on a medal struck in Paris in 1778 honoring George Washington designed by Benjamin Franklin and Voltaire. The stylized likeness of Washington resulted from the inability of Franklin and Voltaire to locate a likeness of Washington to copy when the die for the medal was engraved.
