Four Silk Textile Fragments and Two Purses, China, 19th century, fragment of a yellow kesi robe, woven with dragons in gilt thread inside wave and cloud roundels; a fragment of a lady's robe embroidered with butterflies and peonies in the "forbidden stitch"; two fragments of a blue silk formal court robe, woven with similar four-clawed dragons amidst clouds; and two pleated ovoid lady's purses, one woven with a shou symbol and flowers with a lishui border, the other embroidered with the "Eight Buddhist Treasures" and a lishui border, largest fragment 30 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. Provenance: Purchased in Beijing at the turn of the century when the current owner's grandmother was stationed at the Princeton University Alumni organized YMCA outpost, as reported in The Princeton Alumni Weekly , Vol. XIV, No. 18, February 11, 1914.
