After photographing the Soviet-led invasion of Prague in 1968, Josef Koudelka left his native Czechoslovakia in 1970. With the help of the photographic collective Magnum Photos, which had placed his Prague photographs in the London Sunday Times, he received a visa to stay in England, and when it ran out, he remained in the country. Over the course of several decades, Koudelka wandered through Europe and Great Britain, channeling his own feelings of displacement and alienation into a documentary project that focused on the spiritual and physical state of exile. In 2014 his compelling photographs were the subject of the retrospective Josef Koudelka: Nationality Doubtful at the Art Institute of Chicago.
