Salvador Dali (Spanish 1904-1989) "Chess Pieces, Homage to Marcel Duchamp". Signed numbered AE/45. Cast by F.J. Cooper, Philadelphia. Thirty-two pieces. Sixteen Sterling Silver and sixteen silver gilt. Height 1 1/4" to 3 5/8". Literature: SCULPTURES & OBJECTS DALI by Robert & Nicolas Descharnes, pg. 116 illustrated. Note: Requested by his friend, Marcel Duchamp, Dali designs the chess set in silver for the American Chess Foundation in 1964. The figures reproduce the fingers of the artist's hands, except for the rooks which are modeled after the salt cellars from the Hotel Saint Regis in New York. He based the King on his thumb, the queen is Madam Dali's crowned with a tooth. Set No.1 was retained by Dali for his private collection.
