Gold Gem-set "Makara-head" Bracelet, India, the hinged bangle in elaborate repousse work with "makara-head" terminals, clutching a jewel, cabochon ruby accents, 48. 3 dwt, interior cir. 6 1/8 in. Note: A similar example from Madras is pictured in Traditional Jewelry of India , Oppi Untracht, p. 254, figure 578. Untracht states that this type of bracelet is worn by Rajas, given to them by male subjects as a mark of favor. A similar example is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and states that today this type of jewel is often worn by women.
