A. Butler (American, 19th Century) Italian Soldier with Plumed Hat Signed, dated, and inscribed "A Butler Rome 1885" l.r. Watercolor on paper, 13 x 8 in. (33.0 x 20.3 cm), framed. Condition: Minor fading, not examined out of frame. N.B. On page 52 of Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers there is a listing for an artist by the name of Butler described as: "a little known genre painter who lost an arm in the Civil War. He was painting in Rome in 1870."
