Victorian Irish Marquetry Inlaid Games Table, Ireland, mid-19th century, rectangular fold-over top inlaid with central roundel of Muckross Abbey, flanked by fern leaves with vine and berry border, swivels to reveal vacant compartment for game piece storage, interior inlaid with chess, backgammon and cribbage boards surrounded by shamrock vines, and two roundels of an abbey and a house flanked by oak leaves, all resting on quadripartite claw-foot base, ht. open 30 1/2, wd. 32 3/4, d. 31 in. N.B. Tables like this were often made for the growing tourist market, and part of a style of furniture including worktables, boxes, and trinkets, produced in Killarney and Gap of Dunloe during the mid-19th century, and often made of arbutus wood and yewwood. They often depicted well-known sites in the area such as Muckross Abbey, Muckross House, and other stately architectural sites.
