Engraved Silver-plated Machine Plate, City Point Works, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1867-94, the shaped plate with two attachment lugs on the reverse, boldly engraved "HARRISON LORING, BUILDER,/CITY POINT WORKS,/BOSTON./Designed & Superintended/BY/E.D. LEAVITT, JR./Consulting Engineer, LOWELL, MASS.," (wear), ht. 9 1/8, wd. 13 7/8 in. Note: Harrison Loring (1822-1907) established the City Point Works shipyard in South Boston in 1857. The shipyard produced numerous merchant and navy ships during the Civil War as well as related engines and machinery. Erasmus Darwin Leavitt, Jr. (1836-1916) was a noted mechanical engineer who is best known for his work with steam engines and water pumps.
