Portrait of Elisha Hunt Rhodes, c. 1897, wearing a Rhode Island militia officer's uniform, and a veteran's metal, signed at l.l. CROSS/97 , in a gilt frame, ht. 54, wd. 43 1/2 in. Note: Elisha Hunt Rhodes and his diary where used extensively in Ken Burn's "The Civil War" series on PBS. Rhodes served in the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry as a non-commissioned officer, and rose to be the colonel of the regiment. After the Civil War, he was very active in the Grand Army of the Republic, and commanded the Rhode Island Militia from 1879 to 1893. On the back of the frame is marked "CHRISTIES AUCTION/LOT 98 1985."
