Needlework Sampler, Abigail S. Whitney, September 14, 1832, probably New England, worked in silk threads on a linen ground, lettered "Of female arts in usefulness/The needle far exceeds the rest," above a sawtooth frieze, nine rows of letters and numbers, the maker's name and date, and two urns issuing foliage below, all flanked by floral borders, (toned, faded, oxidation to black threads), 17 x 11 3/4 in., in a modern giltwood frame.
