British School, 19th Century Portrait of a Gentleman, Possibly Robert Emmett Unsigned, sitter identified on label affixed to verso. Oil on panel, 9 1/4 x 7 1/2 in. (23.4 x 19.0 cm), unframed. Condition: Surface grime, varnish discoloration, cracquelure, paint loss, canvas patches to back of panel. N.B. Robert Emmett (1778-1803) was an Irish nationalist and Republican from a Protestant family who sympathised with Irish Catholics lack of representation in Parliament. In 1803, he led a rebellion against British rule and was captured and executed for high treason against the British king. Although his rebellion failed, his actions made him a hero and inspiration to Irish Republicans.
