Late Federal Carved Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer Chamber Table, attributed to William Hawkes Jr. , Marblehead, Massachusetts, c. 1815-20, the scrolled backboard above a shaped top with serpentine front, half-serpentine sides, and ovolo corners, on a conforming case of two cockbeaded drawers, the lower of which has an arched, reeded panel, flanked by half-engaged, spiral- and acanthus leaf-carved legs, replaced brasses, refinished, (very minor imperfections), ht. 34 1/4, case wd. 35, dp. 17 1/2 in. Provenance: Descendants of William Hawkes. Note: William Hawkes Jr. was a soldier in the War of 1812 and subsequently learned the trade of cabinetmaking in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
