Benjamin Greenleaf (Massachusetts/New Hampshire, 1769-1821) Portrait of A. W. Thayer of Boston Unsigned, the subject and artist identified on a note affixed to the reverse. Reverse painting on glass, the subject with curly hair and sideburns wears a white cravat and blue jacket with brass buttons, 16 1/2 x 11 1/2 in., in a black-painted frame. Condition: Retouch mainly to background and jacket, small spots in face. Note: A handwritten note affixed to the backboard reads: "A.W. Thayer, aged 22, +11 months./Painted Dec 1-9, 1818, by Benjamin/Greenleaf. Done at Boston, and an excellent likeness in the opinion of/everybody."
