American School, 19th Century Portraits of Ivory and Mehitable Chellis Unsigned, identified in modern inscriptions on the reverse. Oil on heavy card, Ivory shown directly facing, Mehitable slightly turned with her finger in a book, 25 x 21 1/2 in., in modern paint-decorated frames. Condition: Retouch, losses to edges. Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitters. Note: Ivory Chellis (1800-1892) and Mehitable Kennison (1808-1877), both from Newfield, Maine, were married around 1830, and had one child. Included in this lot are two oval-framed photographs, circa 1875, showing the two subjects later in their lives.
