McDowell-style Forage Cap and Image of First Sergeant James L. McClure, Killed at the Battle of Antietam, c. 1861-62, blue superfine broadcloth body (missing chinstrap), with a ghost of a G above 12 , black-painted leather crescent-shaped visor, a black silk liner (some loss), and a turned leather sweatband; and an oval image on cardstock of McClure wearing his uniform and this forage cap, ht. 6, lg. 9 1/2 in. Provenance: The collection of Denis E. Reen. Note: James L. McClure enlisted in the army on August 10th, 1861, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in company G of the 12th Pennsylvania Reserves, he died on October 10th, 1862, in Smoketown, Maryland, of wounds received on September 17th, 1862 at the battle of Antietam.
