Identified Civil War Box and Documents of Lieutenant Joseph Rylands, c. 1861-65, newspaper-lined wooden box contains letters, inspection returns, company roll book, musket ball, shell fragments, ordnance documents, hymn book, and a brass stencil kit in the original pasteboard box. Provenance: From the collection of the Valley Forge Historical Society. Note: Rylands was an officer in company B, 121st Pennsylvania Volunteers. During the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, he was shot through his arm. During the Battle of the Wilderness he received a shell wound in the right foot, causing his foot to be smashed and one toe cut off. The musket ball and shell fragments included are the ones that caused his wounds.
