Civil War Medal Identified to Samuel K. Thompson, 5th Kansas Cavalry and 54th United States Colored Troops, c. 1865, 14kt gold medal with a rectangular bar at the top, the front marked 5th Kans: Cav: & 54th U.S.C.T. , the back of the bar marked Samuel K. Thompson , below the bar in a shield is marked with the battles fought in 1863, as well as a pair of applied crossed sabers, on the bottom is a crescent and star (VII Corps badge) engraved with crossed muskets and other battles and a central Masonic device, and on the back engraved with additional battles. Note: Samuel K. Thompson fought in the Civil War, and died as a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Buffalo Soldiers," on July 7th, 1880, at the age of 39. His journal for the year 1870 and personal papers are in the collection of the College of William & Mary.
