Drocourt Grand Sonnerie Calendar Carriage Clock with Alarm, Paris, c. 1880, gilt gorge case with heavy beveled glass, gilt and engraved dial mask over the 3-in. porcelain Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds at twelve position and day-of-the-week, day-of-the-month, and alarm dials below, eight-day, time, grand sonnerie strike and alarm movement marked with D C flanking a carriage clock inside of an oval on the back plate, oversize platform escapement and hour and quarter hour repeat on command, all in the original velvet lined leather carrying case, ht. with handle extended 10 in. Note: Drocourt is known for superb, complicated carriage clocks and the present example is no exception. This example with the rare addition of a seconds dial, also combines the complication of full calendar, alarm and grande sonnerie in a heavy gilt case. Carriage Clocks , by Charles Allix, p. 438 lists Pierre and Alfred Drocourt in Paris and Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont at various times. The likely maker, Alfred Drocourt, participated in Paris exhibitions including those of 1880 and 1889 and as with this example, many with the trade mark stamp of D-C flanking a carriage clock. See pages 116-118 of this text for additional information about Drocourt.
