Plains Painted Pictorial Hide Robe, c. late 19th century, made from pieces of angora wool sewn together, painted with a central circle enclosing a sun symbol, four stylized birds, buffalo skulls, and further enclosed in a ring of five-point stars, with a warrior on horseback, animals, a bear paw, and other symbolic devices, 55 x 35 1/2 in. Provenance: "Purchased from the C.G. Walters estate in Houston, Texas. Mr. Walters was an eccentric millionaire who collected American Indian items. He died in 1932. His collection lay in storage from 1932 until 1965."
