Austral Islands Carved Ceremonial Ladle, c. early 19th century, the form completely covered with incised geometric designs, the handle with ten stylized heads around the perimeter, with three birds perched at the top of the large scoop, dark patina, (a couple of cracks at the junction of the shaft and scoop), lg. 59 1/4 in. Provenance: A private New England collection. Literature: From Art and Artifacts: The James Hooper Collection , by Steven Phelps, p. 144: "However, an example in The British Museum (L.M.S.61) has the accompanying legend: 'ladle for serving out of the Poi Haari or coconut pudding to the royal party in the king's house.' Their careful carving supports such possible ceremonial use."
