Attributed to Elvira Sproat Hutchings (American, 1842-1917) Still Life with Peaches and Newspaper. Signed "ES Hutchins" l.r. Watercolor on paper/board, sight size 13 x 19 in., framed. Condition: Insect damage to lower edge, tears to u.r. corner and u.c. edge, not examined out of frame. N.B. Elvira Sproat Hutchings was born in Wisconsin, lived in San Francisco and in Yosemite, California, and died in Vermont. Although there is a discrepancy in the spelling of the signature, it seems probable that this work is by her hand. The newspaper crumpled beneath the plate of peaches bears the masthead The Vermont Watchman , which was published between 1883 and 1911 in Montpelier. Hutchings was known to paint watercolors, many of the Yosemite Valley, but at the end of her life she moved to Vermont into the home of her daughter. Her interesting family history is detailed in the National Park Service Website: http://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/historyculture/hutchings-women.htm.
