Bust portrait of an elegant and stylish lady (Mary, Queen of Scots) wearing a dark red dress with ornate black patterning on fabric over a ruffled white lace collar. Woman with a cross pendant on a strand of pearls. Female sitter presumably Mary, Queen of Scots--handwritten label on verso of stretcher with name. Painting accompanied with consignor provided vintage typewritten and signed document from Louis T. Cheney I stating that the painting was executed by the Scottish painter Sir John Watson Gordon. The letter also states that this work was a copy after the original by Marcus Gheeraerts, court painter to Elizabeth I. Chapman Brothers Carvers, Gilders and Frame Makers London label at bottom of stretcher. Painting unsigned. Framed 38 inches x 33 inches. Image size 28.5 inches x 24.5 inches.
