Continental School, 19th Century Portrait of a Lady as Flora Unsigned, inscribed "Winthrop Astor Chanler/No. 5" on a label affixed to the reverse, l. c. stenciled "Thompson Collection, New York-1870, George P. Rowell" two places on the reverse and on the back of the frame. Oil on canvas, 29 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. (75.0 x 62.0 cm), oval stretcher, oval frame topped with a cartouche. Condition: Retouch, paint losses at the edges of the canvas, canvas deformation, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. The reverse of the painting and its frame are stamped "Thompson Collection/New York-1870/Geo. P. Rowell." George Presbury Rowell (1838 -1908) was an American advertising executive and publisher. As the brother in law of wealthy philanthropist Thomas Thompson (1798-1869), he served as the estate executor to his sister, Thompson's widow, Elizabeth Rowell Thompson. The stamps suggest provenance through the collection of Elizabeth Rowell Thompson and probably Thomas Thompson. The inscription "Winthrop Astor Chanler..." would also suggest a possible provenance through the Astor family at some point.
