$1,968
Tudor-style Cast Iron Fireback, late 19th/early 20th century, depicting a lion passant guardant and thistle, inscribed at base "16/49" and "IM," ht. 26 1/8, wd. 29 1/2 in. Note: This fireback appears to be designed after one found at Owletts, Kent, a country house now owned by the National Trust, and another at The Victoria & Albert Museum. Similar period firebacks with the dates 1649 and 1650 and inscribed with the initials "IM" can be found in The V&A collection, and suggest that the original use of the lettering may have referred to the iron founder. 1649 refers to the date King Charles I was executed.
