Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) Plate I , from Sueño y Mentira de Franco , 1937, edition of 850, printed by Roger Lacourière, Paris, published by the artist, Paris (Bloch, 297; Cramer, 28). Stamped signature l.r., numbered "462/850" in pencil l.l., dated "8 Janvier 1937" within the plate. Etching and aquatint on laid paper, plate size 12 1/2 x 16 9/16 in. (31.7 x 42.0 cm), framed. Condition: Prevalent toning, mat burn, corrugation staining to verso, masking tape and pieces of brown paper tape along all edges on verso. N.B. According to Patrick Cramer, Picasso created the Sueño y Mentira de Franco suite to protest Francisco Franco's coup d'etat. The proceeds from the sale of the prints were used to aid the Spanish Republicans.
