John Marin (American, 1870-1953) Downtown, the El , 1921, from Six American Etchings: The New Republic Portfolio published in 1924, edition of approximately 275 (Zigrosser, 134). Signed "John Marin" in pencil l.l., signed and dated within the plate. Etching on paper, plate size 7 x 9 in. (17.7 x 22.8 cm), framed. Condition: Prevalent toning and mat burn, not examined out of frame. N.B. The exact edition size for the Six American Etchings Portfolio is unknown, but was probably of just over 500. Marin contributed about 275 impressions of this work and nearly the same number of his Brooklyn Bridge and Lower New York , of 1913, to complete his portion of the edition.
