In 1919 Natalia Goncharova was living in Paris, entering what would be a rich period in her career. She worked successfully across many different media, designing for the stage as well as easel painting, and moved fluidly between abstract and figurative styles, often blending traditional Russian imagery and contemporary avant-garde styles. She continued to create stage and costume designs for Diaghilev and was hailed for her modern yet personal interpretation of eastern and Byzantine art. During this period Goncharova became more deeply involved with graphic design, illustrating musical scores, books, posters, and magazines.
