Cast green polyurethane relief over lithograph in black and gray on paper, image/sheet size 32 3/4 x 65 in. (83.2 x 165.1 cm), in the artist's original aluminum frame. Condition: Surface grime, dust to interstices. Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection. N.B. Oldenburg's approach to Pop Art was to choose everyday - often mundane objects - like typewriter erasers, clothes pins, and screws. These were often blown up to colossal proportions. In Profile Airflow he starts with a familiar object: a Chrysler Airflow which was first produced in 1934, and featured a new, streamlined design. Oldenburg scales this object down. The green polyurethane overlay accentuates the aerodynamic form of the car and references its mass production. Beneath this, the lithograph adds shadows to the vehicle's sleek contours. The grid alludes to Oldenburg's rescaling of the car while reminding us of the technical plans that would be used in the car's modern manufacturing.
