Autographed letter signed ("Charles Dickens"), one page, on a bifolium, on Gad's Hill Place letterhead, September 4, 1869. Dickens writes to Captain Charles Clements Brooke in response to an invitation to give a reading in the town of Farnborough. In the letter Dickens states that he will not be reading outside of London and must decline the offer. At the time this letter was written Dickens was not giving readings anywhere due to health issues that affected his vision and left him unable to fully utilize one side of his body. Folded in thirds; light soiling at creases.
