Autographed letter, one page, Mount Vernon, October 10, 1791. To Tobias Lear, in response to his letter dated Philadelphia, October 2, 1791. Washington states: "You letters of the 2d and 5th came to my hands on Saturday morning. Yesterday I allotted to acknowledge the rect of them and to write several letters; but company coming in before breakfast, and from thence till dinner, and an early succession again to day - I can do no more than say they came duly to hand, and approve of your getting the Rooms (mentioned in your letter of the 2d) Painted - The Passage above wants it exceedingly; especially in, and about the cross-passages, and I hope will receive a [Coat. I am Yrs Affectionately. Go. Washington." The final lines and signature have been trimmed off and have been supplied from 55. Framed and matted with reproduction engraving and printed transcriptions of the letter and Lear's of October 2. Tobias Lear was the personal secretary of Washington from 1784 to his death in 1799.
