Gary Kaelon (American 1944-2002), "Marsh Lions". Oil, acrylic and lacquer on kashmir gold granite. Painting depicting an African lion with a large regal mane standing in an alert disposition by water's edge, tail extended and slightly curled upward. Male lion stands next to a crouching lioness who recently drank from the water in front of her. Droplets drip out of her slightly open mouth as she gazes up as if taken by surprise by an approaching figure (from eye direction--likely at left). The female lion's crouching stance alludes to a pouncing position as her back is curved and weight is transferred to her back legs. African landscape with scattered green grass by water in an otherwise brown or tan expanse illustrated by the texture of the granite stone matrix. This is the last work that the artist painted prior to his death. Signed lower left "Kaelon". Accompanied with a copy of a hand written letter from Gary Kaelon authenticating that Mr. Thomas V. and Mrs. Marie B. Patton commissioned this work from him in 2001 and that the piece was completed in October of that same year for $70,000. The letter is signed by "G. Kaelon Boulder, Colorado, 22 October 2001." Also accompanied with copy of invoice on the commission issued to Mr. Thomas V. Patton on October 22, 2001 as well as with a copy of an exhibition catalog of the artist's work at the Thomas Anthony Gallery, 340 Main Street, Park City, Utah. Height 67.5 inches x 82 inches.
