An original pen and watercolor production drawing with text in pen and pencil of Babar and Celeste encaged signed "Jean de Brunhoff" in the lower left. The finished illustration, for which this drawing is a preliminary sketch, appears in Original watercolor and ink drawings by Jean de Brunhoff are exceedingly rare. Two trimmed sheets (one with the illustration, the other with nine lines of text in black ink) are trimmed to a large sheet with notes in pencil discussing the nature of the forms and colors in the illustration. Matted. Size of image 7 1/2 x 9 1/4; Size of sheet 17 x 10 1/2 inches.
