Amsterdam: Johannes Allart, 1782-1789. 4 vols. 8vo, contemporary half calf over pebbled boards, spines gilt-ruled and lettered, spine label. Fifth expanded edition with 24 engraved plates, 11 of which are fold-out and two in color. In this work, written for the general public, Martinet sought to demonstrate the wonders of modern, post-Newtonian science, which he (an adherent of the so-called "physico-theological school") believed did not conflict with traditional Christian beliefs. Wear to boards; joints cracked on some vols.; scattered brownspotting; previous owner's manuscript notations to f.f.e.p. vol. 1.
