Philadelphia: Hubbard Lester, 1809. xxii, [13]-300. 12mo, full contemporary calf, gilt-lettered spine label and later printed pastedown spine label. With engraved fold-out Map of the Country Inhabited by the Western Tribes of Indians. With five engraved Native American portrait plates, including frontispiece "Sioux Queen." First edition of the first published book on the expedition other than Gass, commonly referred to as "The Apocrypha," which includes the earliest map with legends from Lewis and Clark. The work is mainly a compilation of the account of the expedition from Jonathan Carver, Patrick Gass and Alexander Mackenzie, with reprints of various letters of William Clark that had been published in newspapers and the letter from Thomas Jefferson. The map, however, is completely original to this work and rare. The official account was not published until 1814. 1/2-inch and 1-inch tears to fold-out map with some foxing; very minor intermittent foxing; some edgewear to boards; endpapers lightly soiled with pencilled inscriptions; otherwise a good unsophisticated copy.
