Philadelphia: H. Perkins; Boston: Perkins & Marvin, 1837. 152, blanks present. 12mo, original green gilt-stamped cloth titled "Miss Beecher on the Slave Question." First edition. Catharine Beecher, the sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe, believed that women should remain neutral in their political stance regarding abolitionism, exerting their influence, rather, in the home. She wrote the present essay in response to Angelina Grimke's plea for women to support the abolitionist cause. The present rare controversial essay reveals the interesting inter-relation between nineteenth-century abolitionism and nineteenth-century feminism, especially in the northern states. Some light dampstaining and foxing. Literature: Sabin 4290
