Amsterdam, circa 1680. Hand-colored engraved map of Crete. The emphasis on fortifications reflects contemporary events in the capital of Candia. An important strategic and commercial port, Crete had been under the control of Venice from the thirteenth-century. The capital, Candia, was the site of one of the longest sieges ever recorded from 1648 until its fall in 1669. Framed and matted. Crease to center; otherwise fine. Size of frame 26 3/4 x 31 inches.
