Leo Meissner (American 1895-1977) A. N.A., "The Ancients". Wood engraving depicting an outdoor landscape view with large old tree trunks and bare trees at front recalling Caspar David Friedrich's famous gothic painting "The Abbey in Oakwood". Architecture in background of possibly of St. Andrews. Titled in pencil in lower left margin "THE ANCIENTS", numbered in lower center of margin "29/50" and signed lower right of margin "Leo Meisser" in pencil. Verso with original sales sticker as well as a silver stickered label from Frame Art Studio, Red Bank, New Jersey. Framed 14.5 inches x 16.5 inches. Image size approximately 8.5 inches x 10.5 inches. Leo Meissner was born in Detroit, Michigan, and studied art at the Detroit School of Fine Arts and the Art Students League in New York with Guy Pene du Bois and George Luks. He entered printmaking in the 1920's with linoleum cuts and then specializing in wood engraving. Meissner won many prizes and awards which include the Pennell purchase prize from the Library of Congress, Southern Printmakers, and the Detroit Institute of Art. He is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the New York Public Library.
