American, mid 19th century. Handwritten letter discussing clothing return from General Thomas Sidney Jesup (American 1768-1860) dated February 24, 1843. Document framed between black and white portrait image of the General and Osceola. Framed 13" x 26.75". Document measures 6.5" x 7.5". Notes: Jesup is regarded by some as the "Father of Quartermaster Corps". He served as Quartermaster General under President Jackson. In 1936, President Jackson ordered him to deal with the Creek tribe in Georgia and Alabama, and then to assume command of all U.S. troops in Florida during the Second Seminole War (1837–1842). Jesup violated truces to capture Seminole leaders, such as Osceola (pictured at right) which provoked controversy. At the conclusion of the hostilities, Jesup returned to his office as Quartermaster General.
