Carbon typescript of "Down at the Cross. " Ca. 1961 81pp. plus dedication page. "Down at the Cross" was first published as one of the two essays in (Dial Press, 1963). Holograph corrections in Baldwin's hand, largely of typographical mistakes, averaging around two per page. Full page inscription by Baldwin "To Bill and Sylvia," signed "James." Along with a holograph postcard from Istanbul, stamp dated 1961, to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Abernathy: "Happy New Year. See you in February or March. Best, James Baldwin." Edges bumped; soiling to dedication page; otherwise fine. 8 x 10 inches
