A book of autographs and handwritten calling cards of prominent political, military, and literary figures from the late 1880s. Includes signatures of Presidents Grover Cleveland, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Benjamin Harrison; first ladies Frances F. Cleveland, Carrie Scott Harrison, Lucretia Garfield, Lucy W. Hayes, and Mrs. James Polk; Civil War leaders Jefferson Davis, William Tecumseh Sherman, and James Longstreet; as well as Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Oliver Wendell Holmes, George Francis Train, and P. T. Barnum. Oblong 12mo, full leather over limp boards, marked "Autograph Book." Most of the signatures have been laid in, with a few pasted directly onto the pages (including the Twain and the Jefferson Davis). Binding is brittle and detached at one hinge; light soiling and tears to several pages; otherwise a fine collection.
