American, mid 19th century (circa 1860s), brass surveyor's compass by Knox & Shain, Philadelphia. 5 inch diameter brass dial with star to North with blue colored steel needle, clamp, silvered compass ring engraved 0-90 in four quadrants, removable cover, bubble-level and outkeeper scale. Surveying tool contained within lidded, handled and hinged box with label on interior for Knox & Shain Mathematical Instrument Makers. Compass accompanied with tripod and metal covered pointed shaft for surveying land. Box approximate height 4.75", width 14.6", depth 7.5". _x000D_
