London: John Betts, c. 1860 "By the Queen's Royal Letters Patent Betts's 'New Portable Terrestrial Globe...'" The globe is worked by an umbrella-like mechanism covered with glazed cotton. The map has been lithographed on the cloth and boundaries colored by hand. Both the label inside the box, the geography, and political boundaries indicate this to be an early issue rather than the more common version published by George Philip & Son 25 years later. Betts specialized in educational materials.
