London: John Murray, 1846-1856 12 vols. complete. 8vo., contemporary full tan calf-gilt, gilt-decorated backstrip, red and brown morocco labels, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, 5 raised bands. First Edition of Grote's celebrated history of Greece, with the sole exception of Volume XII which is an early edition issued one year after the first. Illustrated with frontispiece portrait in Volume XII and with numerous engraved maps and plans, many folding and several hand-colored in outline. Repaired closed tear to large folding map in Volume I; very faint dampstaining to boards; otherwise a fine set.
