Large painting depicting an Italian mother (flower seller) and her child standing on a stepped surface near Venetian canal, faint glimpse at Venetian cityscape in background to left of figures. Woman and child with similar facial features and dark curly tossled hair. Woman in wrap with gold wedding ring on crossed hands that hold handled woven basket with flowers. Her son wears a white shirt and striped black and brown pants with broken button fly and barefoot displaying their unstable financial situation. He holds a sprig behind his back and appears to be assisting his mother. Signed and dated mid lower left "D. Jerome Elwell Venice 1880". Metal painting plaque on bottom of frame reads "FLOWER GIRL IN VENICE D. JEROME ELWELL 19TH CENTURY". Framed 91.25" x 60.5".
