PROVENANCE A La Vielle Russie Gallery, New York Collection of Bernard Winters, Armonk, New York the Virgin Mary`s body surrounded by apostles and two bishops, a standing figure of Christ is depicted passing Mary`s soul (in the shape of a swaddled infant) to two angels who will take it to heaven; above the figure of Christ appears a six-winged seraphim spreading its wings in a sign of protection. The gilt silver basma oklad with an ornate chased and repousse floral design. Egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on wood panel with kovcheg. Two insert splints on the back. 31.7 x 25.5 cm (12 1/4 x 10 in.), dated assayer`s mark of Andrey Andreev, alderman`s mark Moscow town mark, standard. Bernard J. Winters was a philanthropist and art collector who was captivated by Russian icons. Over a fifty-year period, he worked closely with Sotheby`s, Christie`s, and private collectors to cultivate his collection. His monumental icons, as well as those purchased from Natalie Hays Hammond, daughter of John Hays Hammond, diplomat, were some of his favored items.
