PROVENANCE Christie's New York, October 20, 2006, Lot 722 of trefoil form with a pierced feather border, the turquoise center of the tray with a hand-painted medallion featuring a young peasant woman in a landscape, the medallion surrounded by a border of gilt foliate scrolls and rocailles, painted with a branch extending from the pierced border and into the medallion, similar branch on the verso, diameter: 21. 3 cm (8 3/8 in.). While variants of this pierced design were originally designed for Louis XV s in the mid 18th century, the lone figure featured on the medallion, as well as the slightly different shade of turquoise used in the present example, suggests that this piece received its decoration somewhat after its initial production. The branch design on the center of the tray and on the base is noteworthy, as well. The restorer attempted to disguise a light hairline crack in the body by creating an additional decorative element in conversation with the subject of the medallion- a young woman in a landscape- by turning the crack into a tree branch.
